Snow and The Aquarium

Two days ago we had our first official snowfall here in the valley. O.K. it was a scattered dusting of snow but still there was snow in my yard and every flake counts, right? I love snow and I hope we actually get some this Winter. Our Winters are starting to feel like Spring. Although this year we have been having more Fall and Winter like temps. Sunday , Newfound gap had plenty of snow so we took our kids up there to play for a while before church. I will be posting some pictures of our trip on my other blog, Over hill and Under Hill. Here is a sneak peek though. (Hold your mouse over each picture for commentary)

Hoopy doing a face plant in the snow.

Hoopy with the ensuing brain freeze.

The kids want to have a snowball fight with daddy. So Daddy arms himself with a snow BOULDER!

Kids running in fear! I have no idea who that woman is in this picture but rest assured she was laughing at us.

Tman was with his Uncle but this is the Simcox Family snowman. The first one of the season:)

School has settled into a decent routine after our first quarter. Equations, multiplication and fractions have been tackled easily. Believe it or not, no tears! (At least not from the kids ) I have altered my daily grading on some subjects so that we have a weekly grade instead. Last quarter I graded their English and Spelling every day and figured that into their average. From now on I am only going to take their grades from their weekly test. It works out better for me this way. Plus its like the way their math PACES are graded and I like that system.

We were able to visit the Ripley's Aquarium Tuesday night. (It is free for Sevier County reidents or workers til tonight. All the Ripley's attractions are. I made a post the other day about it. Its on this blog somewhere. Go ahead and look for it just ignore the cobwebs and dust bunnies. I haven't cleaned here yet.) I have some videos I will try to get in this post. If not then I will post them later. The kids and I are going to play mini golf today. Toodles is going to be traveling to Chattanooga tonight to visit his parents. His Father has surgery tomorrow so be much in prayer for him. Pray for Toodles too, for traveling grace. Also if you would, pray for my Momma. She has MS and she has fallen several times this past week and is having some paralysis in her midsection. This is a scary time for her but as always she puts up a brave front. She is quite a woman my Momma!

We will be working on our lapbook/notebook project about Thanksgiving next week. I will post pictures when we finish. Well, have a great day everyone and be sure to visit my other blog to see those pictures. Blessings to all! ~ Nikki

I would also like to leave you with this thought and verses:

The Will of God will not lead you where the Grace of God cannot keep you.

Psalm 145:9 The LORD is good to all: and his tender mercies are over all his works.

Lamentations 3:22 It is of the LORD'S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not.

Assignment #110 - Computers Help People Help People (IBM)

Ephesians 4:29 Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.

Computers Help People Help People(Marketing credit: IBM)

Intro:

There are many ways computers help us. It is a wonderful way to stay in touch with family far away, "meet" other christian women around the globe, and it can be such a blessing with homeschooling.

Assignment:

Share some of your favorite homeschooling sites. The only "rule" for this assignment is that you have to list at least one "free" site. Many homeschooling families have made the choice to live on very little income to do what they believe is best for their children and I want everyone to be able to benefit from this assignment. If you have other sites that are "paid" sites, feel free to include these also as it might be something someone would really appreciate. If you feel led, share your curriculum choices with us. I always love to learn what is out there that I don’t already know about. Please make sure to include links to the sites you share.

This assignment is a great idea! I love free stuff! We are definetly an eclectic homeschool family. I use free unit studies, notebooking pages and lapbooks from the internet all the time. I have quite a list to share.

My ultimate favorite homeschool "printables" sites are Enchanted Learning. I know it is a pay site but let me tell ya, it was the best $20 I spent for school.Tons of resources! And Currclick. Tons of neat stuff and a freebie every week.

Here is a list I put in an earlier post. It is for Thanksgiving.

My verse for this week :

(Psalm 84:1-12)

How amiable are thy tabernacles, O LORD of hosts! My soul longeth, yea, even fainteth for the courts of the LORD: my heart and my flesh crieth out for the living God. Yea, the sparrow hath found an house, and the swallow a nest for herself, where she may lay her young, even thine altars, O LORD of hosts, my King, and my God. Blessed are they that dwell in thy house: they will be still praising thee. Selah. Blessed is the man whose strength is in thee; in whose heart are the ways of them. Who passing through the valley of Baca make it a well; the rain also filleth the pools. They go from strength to strength, every one of them in Zion appeareth before God. O LORD God of hosts, hear my prayer: give ear, O God of Jacob. Selah. Behold, O God our shield, and look upon the face of thine anointed. For a day in thy courts is better than a thousand. I had rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God, than to dwell in the tents of wickedness. For the LORD God is a sun and shield: the LORD will give grace and glory: no good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly. O LORD of hosts, blessed is the man that trusteth in thee.

My Friendship Awards ( I had to repost this because in a moment of "duhness" I deleted it. *sigh* Friday acting like Monday. What a shame!)

I have been blessed by two wonderful bloggy buddies this week , Pam and Michelle.

Pam blessed me with this lovely award:

Michelle blessed me with this beauty:

And Pam and Michelle both blessed me with this yummy award:

1. Please put the logo on your blog.
2. Place a link to the person from whom you received the award.
3. Nominate 3 or more blogs.
4. Put the links of those blogs on your blog.
5. Leave a message on their blogs telling them they've won an award!
6. Start preparing the bread starter

Amish Friendship Bread Starter

To the balance (a little over one cup) of the batter, add the following ingredients and mix well.
1 cup oil
1/2 cup milk
3 eggs
1 tsp vanilla

In a separate bowl combine the following dry ingredients and mix well:
2 cups flour
1 cup sugar
1-1/2 tsp baking powder
2 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp baking soda
1 - (5.1 oz) box instant vanilla pudding
1/2 tsp salt
1 cup nuts

Add dry ingredients to wet ingredients. Mix and pour into two well greased and sugared bread pans. Bake at 325 degrees for 1 hour.

If you keep a starter for yourself, you will bake every 10 days. The bread is very a good quick bread and makes a great gift.

It is very important to use plastic or wooden utensils and plastic or glass containers when making this. Do not use metal at all!

Ingredients:

1 pkg. active dry yeast
1/4 cup warm water (110°F)
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 cup white sugar
1 cup warm milk (110°F)

Directions:

1. In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast in warm water for about 10 minutes. Stir well.

2. In a 2 quart glass or plastic container, combine 1 cup sifted flour and 1 cup sugar. Mix thoroughly or the flour will get lumpy when you add the milk.

3. Slowly stir in warm milk and dissolved yeast mixture. Loosely cover the mixture with a lid or plastic wrap. The mixture will get bubbly. Consider this Day 1 of the cycle, or the day you receive the starter.

Amish Friendship Bread Recipe
Day 1: Do nothing (This is the day you receive the batter, but go by the date on the bag).
Day 2: Mush the bag
Day 3: Mush the bag
Day 4: Mush the bag
Day 5: Mush the bag
Day 6: Add 1 cup flour, 1 cup sugar, and 1 cup milk. Mush the bag. Don't worry if the starter smells, it is fermenting.
Day 7: Mush the bag
Day 8: Mush the bag
Day 9: Mush the bag
Day 10: Add 1 cup flour, 1 cup sugar and 1 cup milk. Stir. Take out 3 cups and place 1 cup each into three separate plastic containers. Give one cup and a copy of this recipe to three (reality) friends.

Now I get to honor some of my friends with both of the above awards.

I would like to pass the award on to these precious people:

I would love to give these awards to EVERYONE on my friends list. I have found much inspiration and humor and goodness in your blogs since I have been here at HSB. I'm glad I found a place where I can be encouraged and Jesus is uplifted. Thanks Bloggy Buddies! God bless you! ~ Nikki

BFS Assignment #109 We Bring Good Things To Life (GE)

Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.

(Philippians 4:8)

Intro:

The passion to sing, the passion to draw, the passion to build, the passion to ride, the passion for reading, the passion for nature… the list is endless. Some children exhibit their passion from day one, others need an experience to spark that passion

Assignment:

Share a field trip/lifestyle learning experience where you really felt you were bringing good things to life for your children, where something came alive for them, or ignited a passion.

We enjoy bringing things to life for our kids by taking them to some of the places that we study. We love to visit Chicamagua Battlefield whenever we are in Chattanooga. Its an awesome place to visit. Especially the weapons museum.Visiting the General Shale Museum in Gray,Tn when they had the Sue exhibit was awesome too. The kids loved the interactive stuff. Getting to sift for fossils was something they enjoyed too. A few weeks back we went hiking to Clingman's Dome and also spent some time hiking on the Appalachian Trail. It was a great time for some nature and history study. I firmly believe that if the kids can get their hands dirty doing it then they can wrap their minds around it. Things "stick" better for us when we can take part in it. Here are some pictures of us in our " hands on" classrooms.

Walking through the fog to the overlook at Clingman's dome.

My boys watching the fog roll down the mountain.

Watching the Ranger fire up the furnace in the Blacksmith's shop in Cades Cove.

I think that the memory verse for this assignment is perfect so I'm gonna stick with it. Blessings! ~ Nikki

Happy Veteran's Day! Join Me In Honoring Our Veterans!

I just wanted to take the time today to say "Thank You " to all of our wonderful Veterans. It seems we get so caught up in the politics of war today that we forget about the people who are in its midst. Our spiritual freedom came at the cost of Jesus' life. Free for us but not for Him. Our physical freedom is the same. To us it may seem free, our American right, but this freedom costs someone, our military and their families. Thank you Veterans for the sacrifices that you have endured for the sake of America. You will not be forgotten.God Bless You Veterans!

I would like to say a special thank you to my Veteran, Toodles. He is a War Veteran ( Desert Storm). Serving his country was a childhood dream that he was able to fulfill in the United States Navy. He is a proud American who still honors his Military brothers , past and present. His service in the Navy cost him his hearing. He now must use hearing aids to hear clearly but it is a sacrifice he deemed worthy. Thank You Papa! I'm proud of you and I love you!Blessings! ~ Momma

Disappointment!

After Tuesday's election I must say I am very disappointed. Our county now has liquor by the drink. It passed by a little over 200 votes. The biggest disappointment comes from knowing that there were Christians who voted for it and some who didn't vote at all which is just the same as voting for it. When will God's people wake up? I think the words of this Casting Crown song really say what I want to say. If Christians began being Christians we could make a great impact. Blessings! ~ Nikki

What If His People Prayed Lyrics

Casting Crowns What If His People Prayed Lyrics

What if the armies of the Lord
Picked up and dusted off their swords
Vowed to set the captive free
And not let satan have one more

What if the Church, for heaven's sake
Finally stepped up to the plate
Took a stand upon God's promise
And stormed hell's rusty gates

Chorus I:
What if His people prayed
And those who bear His name
Would humbly seek His face, yeah
And turn from their own ways

And what would happen if we prayed
For those raised up to lead the way
Then maybe kids in school could pray
And unborn children see light of day

What if the life that we pursue
Came from a hunger for the truth
What if the family turned to Jesus
Stopped asking Oprah what to do

Chorus I:
What if His people prayed
And those who bear His name
Would humbly seek His face yeah
And turn from their own way
Chorus II:
He said that He would hear
His promise has been made
He'll answer loud and clear, yeah
If only we would pray

Bridge:
If My people call by My name
If they'll humble themselves and pray
If My people call by My name
If they'll humble themselves and pray

Choruses:
What if His people prayed
And those who bear His name
Would humbly seek His face, yeah
And turn from their old ways
He said that He would hear
His promise has been made
He'll answer loud and clear yeaah
If only we would pray

(Choruses and bridge ad lib)

2 Chronicles 7:14 If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.

When Autumn Comes To Town
Autumn has kissed the tops of the trees
And brushed with gold the uppermost leaves
The squirrels are gathering, filling their store
Everything must be ready before winter's at the door
The goldfinch is changing his fancy spring clothes
For some that will warm him when Autumn winds blow
The flowers are sighing for it's time to sleep
And the air is filled with the honking of geese
Everything is changing and scuttling around
The world is quite busy when Autumn comes to town

Pray For Our Nation

No matter how disappointed I am about the election, I know that God is in control. It may be scary and hard to understand for me but His plan is perfect. No matter what comes remember this:

For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end. (Jeremiah 29:11)

Whatsoever the LORD pleased, that did he in heaven, and in earth, in the seas, and all deep places. (Psalm 135:6)

Let all the earth fear the LORD: let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him. (Psalm 33:8)

Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth. (Psalm 46:10)

For the LORD most high is terrible; he is a great King over all the earth. (Psalm 47:2)

For God is the King of all the earth: sing ye praises with understanding. (Psalm 47:7)

Blessings! ~ Nikki

Tuesday November 4, 2008 : A Historical Day To Be Sure

First let me say it feels good to relax for a while. Right now I am sitting here at the computer looking out my open window at the most colorful Autumn leaves I can remember. I hear the birds and squirrels scratching through the dry leaves on the ground searching for food and it is such a comforting sound. It makes me smile. The weather has become very pleasant. Our days are around 65 - 70 degrees and our nights around 35 - 45. I have been so busy this past week getting things ready for my Think Pink meeting for my Women's Ministry meeting and our Fall Festival at church. Although I enjoyed both very much it is nice to know that all that extra work is behind me and I can slow down a bit. We have several Dr. appointments this week and next but after that we will hopefully be able to slow down and enjoy the holiday season.

Last night we went to our local Winterfest celebration. The kids played games, ate free food and watched the Winterfest lights get turned on and we watched the awesome fireworks display. We all enjoyed it but I think the best part was the 7 feet tall gingerbread house that WSCC culinary arts department built. It was beautiful! Plus it looked delicious.(It was completely edible.)

Tonight of course Dh and I will be enjoying our right to vote and casting our ballots in this historic election. I encourage everyone to go and vote. Now is not the time to have a "whatever" attitude. We as Christians must stand and do what is right. Vote according to your convictions. God wants us to fully believe in what we say we believe in , whether our belief is in Him or not. And Elijah came unto all the people, and said, How long halt ye between two opinions? if the LORD be God, follow him: but if Baal, then follow him. And the people answered him not a word.

(1Kings 18:21)

And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD. And the people answered and said, God forbid that we should forsake the LORD, to serve other gods; For the LORD our God, he it is that brought us up and our fathers out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage, and which did those great signs in our sight, and preserved us in all the way wherein we went, and among all the people through whom we passed: And the LORD drave out from before us all the people, even the Amorites which dwelt in the land: therefore will we also serve the LORD; for he is our God.

(Joshua 24:15-18)

I would like to share with you a post I made on a discussion on the Homeschool Lounge. It says fully how I feel about voting. The main thing to remember though is no matter what happens today during this election, God is still God and He never changes. His plan will always prevail. Hebrews 13:8 Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.

"I just wanted to put my thoughts here and hopefully I will not offend anyone. First, I used to not vote at all . My Vet DH encouraged me to begin and then of course God convicted me to continue. As Christians we have an obligation to stand for what is right. The simple truth is this , if you don't stand for what is right then you are standing for what is wrong by default. To know to do right and not do it is a sin. God's words not mine. That being the case I could never vote to place someone in office from the Democratic party simply because of their too liberal party beliefs. My belief (please don't anyone be offended, this is my opinion) is that as a Christian I couldn't vote Democrat simply for those too liberal views. I would either be compromising my God by upholding Dem. views or my party by not upholding their views on same sex marriage and other issues. By no means am I a die hard Rep. either. I vote for who I believe stands for the right thing as a Christian. I have been praying about voting and will continue right up until I fill out the ballot. But most importantly is this, stand up for what as right as a Christian and trust that God knows what is best for this world. He has a master plan and all the pieces are falling into place according to Biblical prophecy. He will place into power the ones that will fulfill His plan and believe it or not that may be Obama.(Remember, Pharoah and Herod had their places in God's plan too.) This election will have ripples that spread out worldwide. It is historical for us both as Americans and Christians. But guess what ? God is bigger than this election and He holds the whole world in His hands so no worries right? Blessings! Nikki
Oh, to answer the original question in this thread... Color is not an issue for me. If God doesn't look at the outside why should we."

BFS #108 - Quality is Job #1

Memory Verse: I Timothy 4:12-13 - Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity. Till I come, give attendance to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine.

Intro: Quality is Job #1 (Ford)

Assignment: My family and I rarely do anything apart from each other. We don’t really have quality time together because all our time is together. We feel like the more special moments are when we have dinner together or when we worship God together. For this assignment, tell how you and your family spend QUALITY time together.

My family relaxes and enjoys quality time together in several ways. For us just having everyone home together is quality time. DH had several side jobs throughout this year and he wasn't home much.We would get to see him for a few hours before bedtime and on Sundays but that was it. Now he is home and we are very grateful for the "down" time.We also enjoy movies or just hanging out in the same room. Some read and others watch tv. I guess our all time favorite way to spend quality time together is camping and road trips. For pictures to go with this post feel free to check out this blog and my picture blog, Over Hill And Under Hill. Most of the pictures on these blogs have been taken on our road trips. Blessings! ~ Nikki

Psalms 133:1 A Song of degrees of David. Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!
